River Dreamingby Pamela Napurrurla WalkerThis Wulpayi Jukurrpa (River Dreaming) comes from country north of Yuendumu Community in Central Australia. While the Kakutu River only flows from time to time after good rains, the beds and banks of the river are an important resource for people living in this area. Many Mulju are found along the sandy river bed and water is sourced from these by digging down to the water table. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, associated sites and features. In paintings of this Jukurrpa the flowing river can be represented by straight or sinuous lines and several important Mulju including Wakatinyi, Yarruku and Wurlpatiparnta are often shown. |
ArtistPamela Napurrurla Walker was born in 1957 at Mount Doreen Station. Pamela comes from a large Warlpiri family who reside at Yuendumu Community in Central Australia. Her father who is sadly deceased was an important senior man in Warlpiri culture. Pamela first began painting with Warlurkurlangu Artist (at Yuendumu) in 1994 but it wasn't until 2006 that she began to paint full time. Pamela's artworks depict Dreamings which have been passed down to her from her father's side of the family. These stories and Dreamings have been shared through story telling through countless generations.
