Bush Seed Dreamingby Mary Rumble PitjaraThis Aboriginal painting depicts seeds the women collect from the Utopia region in Central Australia. Aboriginal people have been making bush bread or seed cakes for thousands of years. The bread was high in protein and carbohydrate, and helped form part of a balanced traditional diet. In Central Australia the seeds would be gathered around the opening of ants' nests. The ants had effectively collected and husked the seed for the Aboriginal women and they were able to collect the seed, making their job a lot easier. After allowing the grain to dry, they could begin to prepare the flour. |
ArtistMary Rumble Pitjara was born in 1957 at Utopia in central Australia. Mary's auntie Gloria Petyarre and Gracie Morton Pwerle taught her to paint on canvas and over time Mary has developed her own style. Mary's depictions are of bush medicine bush tucker and Awelye (body paint design) referring to her country. |
