BiographyMaria Nampijinpa Brown was born in 1973 and comes from Yuendumu Community approximately 300km from Alice Springs in Central Australia. She is the daughter of Aboriginal artist Wendy Nungarrayi Brown and granddaughter of Bessie Nakamarra Sims (sadly deceased) and Paddy Japaljarri Simms (sadly deceased) who was one of the founding artists of Warlukurlangu Artists. Maria grew up surrounded by talented artists and would often watch her mother and grandparents paint and listen to their stories. Maria has been working closely with Warlukurlangu Artists - a local Aboriginal Art Centre based in Yuendumu since 1995. She paints her parents and grandparents Dreamings, stories which have been passed down for generations. Maria's Dreamings relate to her traditional country North-West of Nyirripi. Maria uses traditional iconography while developing a modern individualistic style to depict her stories. |
