Lukarrara Jukurrpaby Margarina Napanangka Miller

Lukarrara Jukurrpa means Desert Fringe-Rush Seed Dreaming. This Jukurrpa or Dreaming belongs to the Nakamarra and Napurrurla women and the Jakamarra and Japurrurla men. The Dreaming is associated with a place called Jaralypari, north of Yuendumu Community in Central Australia. Lukarrara is a grass with edible seeds. The seeds are ground down to make a flour, water is added and used to make damper cakes to be cooked and eaten. In traditional Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is often used to depict the story of women collecting and making the flour at Jaralypari. In this small painting a contemporary depiction is used showing the Lukarrara grass with its seeds.

Artist

Margarina Napanangka Miller comes from Lajamanu Community in Central Australia. She grew up in Lajamanu before attending school in Alice Springs. When her parents separated she resided with her mother in Lajamanu however would often visit her father who relocated to Yuendumu Community, approximately 300km from Alice Springs. She later married Stephen Wilson, a local Yuendumu man and relocated permanently to Yuendumu where she started her family. She worked for a number of years at the local childcare centre as well as in the local primary school as an assistant teacher.

Margarina began painting for Warlukurlangu Artists in 1999, and Central Art is pleased to share some of her artworks through our ongoing relationship with Warlukurlangu Artists. As a child, Margarina would listen to her mother and maternal grandfather's stories and watch her mother paint. Her father has also passed down his stories. Margarina paints Wanakiji Jukurrpa (Bush Tomato Dreaming) and Yarla Jukurrpa (Bush Potato Dreaming). These stories relate to the area around Mount Theo where he grandfather's Dreamings are. These stories have been passed down through Margarina's family through the generations.
