Simpsons Gapby Gloria PannkaThis small watercolour depicts a scene in the gully north of Simpsons Gap. Simpsons Gap is about 17km west of Alice Springs in Central Australia. The Gap is a sacred site to Central Arrernte Aboriginal people and is called Rrengetyirpe in the local language. It is a place associated with Perentie (Goanna), Eagle and Rock Wallaby Dreamings. |
ArtistGloria Pannka was born in 1949 and comes from Hermannsburg Community in Central Australia. She is a senior Western Arrernte women who lives in Thakaperte (near Hamilton Downs). Gloria is a second generation Hermannsburg School watercolour artist. Her father is Claude Pannka who was one of the original Hermannsburg School watercolour artists. Gloria's father taught her to paint as a young girl using watercolours. She continues to paint in this style of watercolour landscapes which is well known by the Hermannsburg School tradition made famous by Albert Namatjira. Gloria uses fine detail and subtle tones to capture the West MacDonnell Ranges where she currently lives and paints. Gloria’s work has featured in a number of exhibitions throughout her career. In 2008 she received a Highly Commended award for her painting in the NATSIAA awards which was then acquired by the NT Museum and Art Gallery. Gloria has also had the honour of having her painting ‘West MacDonnell Ranges’ acquired by the Parliament House Art Collection Canberra. Her paintings are exhibited in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and in many private collections. Gloria was again Highly Commended at the NATSIAA awards in 2014 for the collaborative Knara Nunaka Tjurretja – Our big country: the West Mac Donnell Ranges. |
