Rockholesby Edith Jackson Nampitjinpa
This artwork by Edith Jackson depicts rock-holes (as seen as roundels throughout the artwork). The wavy lines on the upper and lower margins of the painting represent the surrounding sandhills. Australian Aboriginal people have inimate knowledge of rock-holes as it was an essential part of living in the desert. Without water you cannot survive. Rockholes are also considered sacred sites by women who surround themselves around sandhills for ceremonial activities. This artwork uses ochre colouring which traditionally was used as a natural paint. Ochre rocks in varying colours were ground down into a powder with a little liquid added. This created a paste or paint which as used in ceremonial activities to paint the body.

Artist
Edith Jackson Nampitjinpa is a Pintupi artist who lives in Kiwirrkura, Western Australia. She paints women’s ceremony and Tingari for her country using intensely dotted surfaces in ochre-inspired palettes, often with the concentric square form as a dominant motif. She paints Ngurrapulangu, a clay-pan site, west of the Kintore Community, where in mythological times a group of Tingari men camped as they travelled west, eventually passing through Umari and Wala Wala. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret nature.
